PHILADELPHIA: History, Cheesesteaks and Baseball

The city of Philadelphia is nestled away in the state of Pennsylvania. It is one of the biggest cities in the country, but is a slightly less touristy option that the likes of New York City or Los Angeles.

Famous for the place of liberty and being the birthplace of the USA, Philadelphia has much more to offer than its rich history. Quirky street art, culinary treats to die for, and hidden secrets are dotted around this remarkable city.

Here are the top five must sees for a first time visit to the city.

LIBERTY BELL

For a first time visit, you must go and see the Liberty Bell. The bell is a symbol of American Independence. This is an interesting piece of American history, and is a free attraction.

ROCKY STEPS AND STATUE

This is one of the most famous attractions the city has to offer. Put on your running shoes, and get ready to feel like a superstar athlete as you can take to the steps and feel like the actual Rocky. Once you have completed your run to the top, head on back down and take the famous photo with the Rocky statue.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK

A trip to Philadelphia would not be complete without trying a famous cheesesteak. The sandwich consists of thinly sliced steak, cheese, and the choice of onions in a hoagie roll. There is much debate as to where does the best cheesesteak. I have only visited one place, which was Sonny's, and it was amazing.

PHILLIES GAME

A great cultural experience is to attend a sports game. In the summer months, it is baseball season, so a trip to Citizens Bank Park to catch a Phillies game would be a fun evening activity. Entertainment, food, and Instagram Picture opportunities are all on offer here.

EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY

A slightly less famous attraction, but one of the best, is the Eastern State Penitentiary. It is a former prison, which had notable inmates such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton. This experience gives an audio guided tour so you can take it at your own pace. It allows you access to cells, the infirmary, and even death row.
